Acceptable Use Policy

Permit records describe people's homes. This policy sets out how you may and may not use them, and applies to everything you do with OpenPermits: search, exports, alerts, webhooks and the API. Breaking it can get your account suspended.

Allowed, with care

• Marketing your services to properties and businesses that appear in the data (mail, door-to-door, digital advertising), as long as you follow the marketing laws that apply to you, including CAN-SPAM, the TCPA, Do-Not-Call rules and state solicitation laws, and you honor opt-outs.
• Market research, forecasting, competitive analysis and property-level risk analysis.
• Showing records or derived insights to your own customers inside your product, within the Terms.

Not allowed

• Using the data as a factor in decisions about a person's eligibility for credit, insurance, employment, housing or tenancy, or any other purpose covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
• Discriminating against anyone on the basis of a protected characteristic, including in housing, lending and insurance, or steering in violation of fair housing laws.
• Stalking, harassing, threatening or surveilling people, or trying to identify or locate a specific person (for example, by joining our records with other data to find who lives at an address) for any purpose other than lawful marketing to the property.
• Posing as a government agency, inspector or utility, or implying that a permit creates an obligation to buy from you.
• Reselling or republishing the data in bulk, or feeding it into a competing permit data product.
• Sharing API keys outside your organization, creating accounts to get more trial allowance, or working around rate limits, credits or other technical limits.
• Probing, scanning or load-testing the Service, or trying to reach data or accounts that aren't yours.
• Pointing webhooks at systems you don't control.

Reporting misuse

If you think someone is misusing OpenPermits data, email data@openpermits.ai. People who want a record corrected or removed can use the record correction and removal process.
